yeah, back! There was the USEA Seminar @the Peranakan museum on 1 November 2008. the tour guide was rather informative and she added in extra information while we toured the museum. unfortunately, my camera spoiled and i was unable to take any pictures :( boohoo!!
yup, these are some of the facts (not really organised) which i gathered at the Peranakan museum: (sorry for the lack of pictures!!!!!!!!!!)
+ Peranakan museum used to be Tao Nan School (first chinese school to teach in Mandarin).
+ Lee Boon Heng, Tang Tock Seng, Lee Kuan Yew are Peranakans.
+ Peranakan is actually a Malay word.
+ men known as Babas, unmarried/young women known as Nonas, married women known as Nonyas, old women known as Bibiks
+ trading was controlled by women in SEA
+ Peranakan men and women were considered as adults only when they marry (they usually got married in their teens).
+All the jewellery which the bride wears is symbolic as it reminds her of her responsibility and how she has to be.
+ Peranakan wedding lasts for 12 days.
+ Embroidery & beadwork is a skill that has to be known by the bride (she will make slippers for the groom).
+ The Peranakan loved their children. {duhh :) }
+ Peranakans were open to religion
+ Peranakans were superstitious (the amulets!!)
+ They prayed to their ancestors.
+ Their utensils were silver??
+ the man eats first then only the woman
+ Lim Chee Neo is the first Peranakan doctor.
+ OCBC was found by a Peranakan (O.o)
woah!! that's all for now. actually, there are more things to post about (notice that this post's title is referred to as "PART 1") but i wanna do some research about them before i rattle about them. so i guess, for now, ......buhbyes!!
hey, back!!sorry, have not posted for v.long!=.= today, we had preparation for Malay dance. yep, and our seniors taught us the dance. It was kinda fun learning it!!RSP camp tomorrow and the day after tomorrow!!sorry i still havent blogged about the museum trip. museum trip would be splitted into different posts cuz there's quite a lot of things when research is done. will blog about it + the rsp camp pretty soon!!photos of RSP camp would also be coming up soon!!stay tuned!buhbyes!!
back! yep, here to post something more abt Myanmar. (this post is NOT going to be v.long) actually, Myanmar is quite an interesting country ..... their festivals, culture, clothes...... there's really loads!
kays, i'll start to present wat i wanted to and evrythng is summarised so that the post does not seem to be too "word-y"! (uhm, thnx to: http://www.shwedagon.org/)
here it goes! (Some thing more abt Myanmar) :
+ known as "The Land of Gold"
+ giant, glittering pagodas can be seen in this friendly city
+ well-known for its jewels
+ all other manners of hand-crafted goods are available (esp. for tourists)
+ Yangon (capital city) has a population of 5 million people [wow!!!!]
+ Most of them are Buddhists
+ 135 ethnic groups in Myanmar (each with their own proud culture & language)
+ people are hospitable
+ good food :)
+ glittering and vast Shwedagon Pagoda (full of history, spirituality and lore)
Now, let's "investigate" more abt the Shwedagon Pagoda!!!
The Shwedagon Pagoda:
Sitting high atop the sacred shrine of Singuttara Hill, housing relics of The Buddha and three Buddhas that preceded him, encased in gold and in jewels, the Shwedagon pagoda is a wonder to see. The beauty if the architecture and design will take your breath away, as will the sparkling, light catching jewels. This wondrous holy place, filled with history and legend, is not to be missed on your journey.
Ya, that's about it for now. Buhbye!
hey, there! i've successfully removed the song frm the blog cuz i thought it wld be a hinderance when watching the videos.... so ya, i have two videos from Youtube abt ASEAN to keep you readers occupied while i wander........... enjoy!
Basically, this video is on ASEAN and oh, the background music is the ASEAN song (if it exists) if i'm not mistaken. the video shows the aims/goals of ASEAN and the ASEAN countries and some other pictures!
uhm, ya, this is the information/description of the video which i got frm youtube:
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a geo-political, economic and culture-sharing organization of 10 countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on August 8, 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Its aims include the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, and the promotion of regional peace.
Members of ASEAN:
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam
Oh, besides, thought that you guys would like to know the lyrics of the ASEAN song. well, here it is (thanks to youtube again!!!) :
LET US MOVE AHEAD (ASEAN Song)
Composed by Candra Darusman
Lyrics by Rizali Indrakesuma
Arranged by Erwin Gutawa
Sung by Lea Simanjuntak & Gabriel B. Harvianto
Throughout these years
We have resolved
Working hard together
For a true community
The beauty of diversity
Bridging all the differences
A sense of unity
CHORUS:
Let us move ahead
Hand in hand as one
Let the virtue stand
And face the challenges of time
Let us move ahead
Integrate as one
To an ASEAN community
Prosperity, peace and harmony
The future is ours
We have the strength
We shall find the peace
Within ourselves and with the world
And as we strive
In our resolve
Sharing this one vision of a true community
Repeat the Chorus
Repeat I except the sixth line
Repeat the Chorus two times
To an ASEAN community
Prosperity, peace and harmony
I've got another video (its below) frm youtube called the ASEAN community. It's 2D animation and ALSO educational in the sense that it talks about the different aspects of ASEAN. to put it simply, it's enriching..... enjoy!
really hope you enjoyed the two videos especially the second one (it's more entertaining :D)! Buhbye!
Hey, back! sorry, i am unable to blog abt the first RSP fieldtrip becuz i was unable to make for it. Uhm, there was this RSP lesson we had some time back and i'm back here to blog abt it. It was about Burma.....ya, so here it is:
+ The Burmese have eight days in a week (cool!). Their Wednesdays are divided into "two" days, morning and afternoon.
+ Everyone knows the day of the week he/she were born and they pray at the shrine for the day which they were born.
+ Placing gold leaf on shrine as a donation is a common practice.
+ The Burmese are known for their gentle, soft-spoken manner (they are real polite!).
+ The Burmese Martyrs' Day is celebrated on July 19.
+ Burmese people celebrate the Thingyan festival which is the Burmese New Year Water festival and its held around mid-April.
+ There are around 135 tribes each with its own dialect and attire (uh oh...) .
+ Myanmar was under the British colony.
+ Mandalay, a cultural city, was also the last capital of the Burmese Monarchy. It is the second largest city, 680 km north of Yangon and its the center of arts and crafts.
That's all for now. I dun really want to cram too much information at one time. Sorry for the lack of pictures in this post, but will surely come back with more :D Buhbye!
Realized that there was this RSP lesson which unfortunately I was unable to attend. Heard from others that they saw a video on "Kuda Kepang" and yeah, so I was interested (also becoz i didnt see it) and did some research. Uhm, before I start rambling abt Kuda Kepang, I'd better post the video from youtube first!
My thoughts! :
+ the men seemed to be in a “trance-like” state / sort of possessed…
+ sorry, but I was really horrified/terrified/appalled …..when I saw the video
+ I think that uhm, such dance should really be banned (though it’s part of their culture I guess, I presume that it is part of their religion) as it seems kind of torturous and hurtful ----- though the dancers don’t feel that way
+ the men seemed like they were “part of the horses”
+ uhm, I learned that Kuda Kepang is also performed at weddings and oh, there would also be female dancers
+ oh, last but not least, I think that the dancers are rather admirable (I can/would never do such a thing!!!!!!!)
Enough of what I think, I guess, as I really do not know anything abt Kuda Kepang. Time for more logical stuff from the internet abt Kuda Kepang! Before that, allow me to show some pictures about Kuda Kepang.

(Thanks to: http://www.dancemalaysia.com/Dance/Traditional/Folk_Dance/Kuda_Kepang/kuda_kepang.htm)
+ Kuda Kepang is a dance from Johor.
+ It was once a form of totemic (refer to this website for the meaning of totemic: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/totemic) worship.
+ It has strong links with spirit possession and often dancers will go into a trance-like state.
+ This dance now generally renders the tale of nine Javanese men who spread the Islamic faith in the interior of Java.
+ Kuda Kepang is performed by nine dancers who are seated astride a two dimensional “horse” made of hide or pleated ratton.
+ The dancers re-enact the early Islamic battles in enthusiastic gestures and vigorous action. As time passed, this dance is seen more for its entertainment value.
+ The dance is performed in accompaniment to a rich and exotic rendition of traditional music played with indigenous instruments such as gongs, tambourines and angklungs.
Yeah, so that’s all for now. After everything, I think that Kuda Kepang is kind of a interesting dance and I hope that you have gained as much knowledge as me about Kuda Kepang! Buhbye!

ASEAN Flag
That's all for now, will come back with more information about the ASEAN flag and other Southeast Asian countries soon!
