yeah, back! There was the USEA Seminar @the Peranakan museum on 1 November 2008. the tour guide was rather informative and she added in extra information while we toured the museum. unfortunately, my camera spoiled and i was unable to take any pictures :( boohoo!!
yup, these are some of the facts (not really organised) which i gathered at the Peranakan museum: (sorry for the lack of pictures!!!!!!!!!!)
+ Peranakan museum used to be Tao Nan School (first chinese school to teach in Mandarin).
+ Lee Boon Heng, Tang Tock Seng, Lee Kuan Yew are Peranakans.
+ Peranakan is actually a Malay word.
+ men known as Babas, unmarried/young women known as Nonas, married women known as Nonyas, old women known as Bibiks
+ trading was controlled by women in SEA
+ Peranakan men and women were considered as adults only when they marry (they usually got married in their teens).
+All the jewellery which the bride wears is symbolic as it reminds her of her responsibility and how she has to be.
+ Peranakan wedding lasts for 12 days.
+ Embroidery & beadwork is a skill that has to be known by the bride (she will make slippers for the groom).
+ The Peranakan loved their children. {duhh :) }
+ Peranakans were open to religion
+ Peranakans were superstitious (the amulets!!)
+ They prayed to their ancestors.
+ Their utensils were silver??
+ the man eats first then only the woman
+ Lim Chee Neo is the first Peranakan doctor.
+ OCBC was found by a Peranakan (O.o)
woah!! that's all for now. actually, there are more things to post about (notice that this post's title is referred to as "PART 1") but i wanna do some research about them before i rattle about them. so i guess, for now, ......buhbyes!!
